Save money instantly with new thermostat

I get many calls on my radio show about how to save energy in the home. While insulation and sealing leaky windows are obvious answers, many people do not think about installing a programmable set-back/set-up thermostat. A programmable thermostat can raise and lower the temperature at preset times during the day, saving you money the moment you install it.

Thermostat installation

Tools

Correct size screwdriver, programmable thermostat, black marker, masking tape

Materials

Masking tape, batteries

1. Turn off power to the HVAC/AC system at the main service panel and remove the cover plate.

2. Unscrew the thermostat body.

3. Identify the screw terminal locations by labeling the low-voltage wire with masking tape. Make sure all the low-voltage wires are disconnected.

4. Remove the thermostat base and tape the wires against the wall so that they do not fall behind into the wall cavity.

5. Using the screws included with the new thermostat base, mount the base to the wall. Thread the wire through the new base.

6. Using the connection chart that came with the new thermostat, screw the wires into the proper places.

7. Install the batteries into the thermostat and attach the front panel to the base. Turn on the power and program the thermostat.

8. Enjoy a comfortable home while saving energy all year round.
