Fluorescent lights are a snap to replace

Fluorescent tube lights are pretty much trouble-free and they also use less energy than regular lights. They last about three years and produce two to four times as much light per watt as a standard light. While most homes do not have these types of lights in the main part of the homes, they are used in basements, garages and laundry rooms. Change out a fluorescent tube light when dark rings on the ends appear.

Changing the tube

Tools: Ladder, safety goggles, work gloves

Materials: Replacement tubes (proper color and wattage), dry dust wand, spray window cleaner

1. First turn off the power to the light. Remove the diffuser and wash with window cleaner.

2. Remove the tube by rotating it one-quarter turn in either direction. Slide the tube out of the sockets. Be careful not to force the tube out because you could break the socket very easily. Plan on using the package that the new tubes came in for the old tubes.

3. Inspect any tube you are replacing. A new tube will have no discoloration while a bad tube will be dark at the end. Before putting the new tubes back, dust the light fixture with the dry dust wand.

4. Install the new tube the same way you removed the old one. Again, be careful not to break the socket. Then, put the diffuser back on. Turn the power back on.
