Prepare garage door for cold

The weather is starting to get colder as we move from fall to winter. One item in your home that feels the weather change the most is your garage door. It is important to maintain the metal and electrical parts of the door to ensure that it will work correctly all winter long. Here are a few key steps to keep your garage door working throughout the cold weather.

Garage door maintenance

Tools: Screwdriver, cloth shop towel

Materials: Lightweight oil (3 in 1), liquid or powdered graphite,

1. Make sure to lubricate the metal tracks, pulleys and rollers. Do not use grease because it catches dust and dirt. Use lightweight oil for the job.

2. If the latch is sticking, use graphite in a powder or liquid form. Oil will just clog the latch and lock even more.

3. For garage doors with a chain, use lightweight oil on the entire length of the chain. Do not use grease. If you have a drive screw instead of a chain, you can use the same oil.

4. Make sure to test the door's closing force. You can make adjustments to the door at the opener's motor case. Since different models have different mechanisms you may want to consult the owner's manual or download the information from the manufacturer's Web site.
