Shorten a too-long door and make it fit You put in new carpeting and suddenly the door no longer fits. It rubs against the carpet or may not even move. Most interior doors should allow a 3/4 -inch gap between the bottom of the door and the floor. Fear not. You can shorten the door all by yourself. No need to hire a handyman. Just follow these instructions and success will follow even if you have a hollow-core door. Shortening doorTools: Tape measure, hammer, screwdriver, utility knife, sawhorses, circular saw, chisel, straightedge and clamps Materials: Carpenter's glue 1. While the door is still in place, measure 3/8 inch up from the top of the carpeting or floor covering and mark a line across the door. Remove the door from its hinges. 2. Cut through the veneer across the line to with the utility knife prevent the door from chipping when it is sawed. 3. Put the door on sawhorses and clamp a straightedge to the door as a cutting guide. 4. Cut the door off at the pencil line. 5. Clamp the wood you trimmed and chisel the veneer from both sides. 6. Apply wood glue to the top and bottom and insert into the bottom of the door. Wipe off runoff glue with a damp rag. 7. Let dry overnight and then re-hang the door. It closes. |
