There is nothing worse than flushing a toilet and absolutely nothing happens.

The problem is that the flapper ball in the water closet has not been lifted when you pressed down on the handle. First thing to do is to find out what's wrong.

Fixing a non-flushing toilet

Materials: Flapper ball replacement kit

Tools: None

1. Remove the lid from the water closet and take a look at the problem.

2. The problem has to be either the flapper or chain. Be sure to check the seal. Occasionally that also has to be removed and replaced.

3. In this case, the little plastic bracket that attaches the flapper ball to the chain snapped off. A new flapper ball is needed.

4. Get a new flapper ball. The red composites are a little more expensive, but last longer.

5. Turn off the water supply to the toilet.

6. Since all that is needed in this repair is the flapper ball, remove it from the holding bracket.

7. Replace the flapper ball.

8. Flush the toilet to see that it is working properly.

9. If it doesn't flush properly, you probably either made the chain too long or too short. Readjust the chain and retest.

10. When you finally get the chain length right and the flapper works perfectly, replace the water closet lid. You're done.
