Give your kitchen a two-day facelift

If you would like a new kitchen, but the bank account says "no," you can give it a new look by changing the color of the cabinets. It is a lot of work, but it can save you a lot of money. You may also want to paint the walls.

You are going to need two rooms and two days to do this.

Here's how you will do it

Tools: Screwdrivers, sponges, pails, paint brushes, small- and regular-sized rollers, painting tray, paper drop cloths, work table for cabinet doors and drawers

Materials: TSP (trisodium phosphate), ammonia, sandpaper, steel wool, tack rag, water-base stain kill, ceramic base paint, roller-tray insert, painters tape and plastic sheeting

1. Remove everything from the kitchen.

Remove hardware from cabinet doors and drawers. Take doors and drawers to the work room.

Wash cabinets, drawers and doors inside and out with mixture of 3 ounces dry measure TSP, 1/2 -cup ammonia, 1 gallon of warm; water rinse copiously.

Apply painters tape and plastic sheeting to all areas you do not want painted.

2. Sand all the shiny surfaces with 100-grit sandpaper. Wipe all surfaces with tack rag.

3. Paint all interior and exterior cabinet surfaces with water-base stain kill. Follow up with two coats of ceramic-base interior paint such as Muralo Ultra Ceramic Waterborne Eggshell Enamel, (800) 631-3440.

4. Paint doors and drawers with one coat of water-base stain kill and two coats of paint.

5. Remove painters tape and plastic sheeting as soon as the paint has dried to the touch. Let doors and drawers set for 48 hours before reassembling your kitchen.

Read paint can label carefully. Do not use before time the manufacturer says the paint has totally cured (usually 4-5 days).
