Home show attendance sign of housing rebound

As the housing market continues to improve, so does the interest in home improvement projects. And that fervor was evident at the recent Novi Home Show sponsored by the Homebuilders Association of Southeast Michigan, builders.org.

According to the association’s executive director Mike Stoskopf, attendance for this year’s show was up 11 percent over last year, and was the best-attended January show since 2006. And with more exhibitors this year, attendees got a chance to see plenty of new products.

Kearns Brothers, kearnsbrothers.com, was displaying its new Beechworth Windows line, beechworthwindows.com, a subsidiary of James Hardie Building Products. Beechworth Windows are high-quality fiberglass windows that feature a fiberglass exterior frame and real wood interiors to better fit a home’s decor.

While the trend in natural stone countertops leans toward lighter colors, there are still homeowners who want a bolder look. Mont Surfaces, montsurfaces.com, a supplier of unique, top-quality natural stone and fine-engineered materials, was displaying its unique Precious Stone Collection, which contains hand-selected agates, amethyst, petrified woods and other semi-precious stones.

EcoGranite, ecogranitegroup.com, specializes in making recycled granite products for the home. This year at the show, the company was highlighting a unique paving product made from 100 percent recycled stone aggregate and a proprietary binder. This paving system can be used as a porous pavement allowing a large amount of water to pass through and be absorbed into the ground naturally or as a decorative coating over existing surfaces.

Infusion Kitchen and Bath Showrooms, infusionshowrooms.com, again presented the Kohler Bold Experience exhibit housed in a semi-truck trailer complete with all the latest Kohler products. One new style kitchen sink on display was the Kennon single-bowl sink made of Kohler Neoroc, a matte-finish composite material designed for extreme durability that resists scratches, stains and fading and is highly heat- and impact-resistant.

With the increased attendance at this year’s show, it will surely affect your ability to get those projects done. In fact, I talked with exhibitors who were booking many more appointments than last year. So don’t take too long to get started or you could be waiting for the best contractors.
