Innovative products on display at builder’s show in Orlando

The annual International Builders Show (buildersshow.com) was back in Orlando this year after stints in Las Vegas, and the attendance grew to approximately 80,000 and featured more than 1,500 manufacturers and suppliers exhibiting their products.  Here are some that I found innovative and useful:

When doing a remodeling project, often using re-claimed items from an old home or building are the perfect touch to give your renovation that worn look.  Two companies that were highlighting reclaimed wood to use for DIY renovations were Artis Wall, artiswall.com and StikWood, stikwood.com.  Artis Wall planks are made from authentic reclaimed wood from barns, buildings and snow fencing across the U.S. The company de-nails the wood and kiln dries it to make the wood more stable.  Stikwood is also made from reclaimed and sustainable woods sourced from various locations in the U.S. Both products are installed to walls using provided sticky tape or in Stikwood’s case, a peel and stick tape that is already on each plank.

If you have a fireplace that is the focal point of a room, you may not be thrilled about the recent trend of mounting your flat-screen TV above the mantel.  But with the ARTV Mount from Revolution Television Mounts, rtvm.net, you can enjoy a classic painting or picture hanging above the fireplace mantle and then, with the touch of a button, the screen lowers to an optimal viewing angle and then returns it behind your artwork when the movie or game is over.

Kids are known to enjoy writing on their bedroom walls or tables with chalk or markers.  But now even big kids can write on walls or countertops and erase it after they are done with Formica’s new Writable Surfaces, formica.com.  The Writable Surfaces collections offers six marker and chalkboard options that gives you the chance to add your own creative expression throughout your home. So the next time your need to write out a note to your spouse or even create your home improvement “To-Do” list, you can do it right on your wall or countertop.

Flushing toilets results in up to a third of your home’s water consumption.  However by installing the Greyter Home system, greyter.com, you can reduce typical interior household water consumption by up to 30 percent by recycling shower and bath water so that it can supply all of the water typically required for flushing toilets.

Speaking of bathrooms, I ran into the owner of Universal Plumbing Supply (248) 542-3888, universalplumbingsupply.net, Jim Kronk who distilled the show into three simple words; “It was huge!”

Kronk explained, “While it is hard to reinvent a toilet or sink, there are items that were cashing in on lots of attention like touch activated faucets, electronic shower systems and mirrors with build in LED lighting.”.

“When you think about it, you’ll probably spend more money on ceramic tile and a vanity when remodeling a bathroom.  But the market for luxury items in the bath are thriving.”, Kronk said

Rubber boots around sanitary stack vent pipes on your roof can deteriorate when exposed to the sun and high temperatures, causing them to crack and leave a gap where water can enter the house. Perma-Boot by Manning Building Products, perma-boot.com, is a gasket-less two piece pipe boot repair system designed to permanently repair leaks around the vent pipes that penetrate your roof. Perma-Boot slides over existing roof vent boots and no tools are required.

A newer entry into the PVC deck category is Intellideck, intellideck.us, which is a single homogeneous piece of high performance PVC layer that is completely waterproof and protects the substructure that is underneath your deck from water damage.

With all the new and useful home products on display at this year’s show, along with an uptick in attendance, it is obvious that the home remodeling and homebuilding world is back on track.  And that is good news for homeowners who are ready to either update their current home or buy a new one.
