New gas logs capture the look of a wood fire

You see gas log sets everywhere and in every price range. You can have vented and unvented. You can get them at hardware and discount stores, home centers and fireplace retailers.

They are beautiful looking logs that burn propane or natural gas and produce a good deal of heat. Their greatest strength is also their greatest weakness.

Wood fires constantly change as the logs are consumed. Your imagination takes control and looking deep into the flames can take you to uncharted worlds.

Gas logs are consistent and unchanging. Until now.

Take fire,

Add glass

And you have a whole new world of fireplace design.

Fireglass by American Fireglass (888) 264-1017, www.

americanfireglass.com, uses a gas log technology that brings back the hypnotic mystery of a wood fire.

The glamorous result stars at many casinos and glitzy restaurants. It could star in your fireplace for less than $1,000. When you consider that this is less than one-third of the installed cost of a good natural-gas fireplace insert, this is a real bargain.

In Metro Detroit, Fireglass burns brightly at Evergreen Home and Garden in Clinton Township, (586) 791-2277. It will be coming soon to Emmett's Energy in Waterford Township and Romeo, (586) 752-2075, and Heat N' Sweep in Canton Township, (734) 455-2820. Two Web-based retailers that specialize in Fireglass are, www.fireonglass.com, (888) 810-FIRE) and www.blazingglass.com, (866) 99-BLAZE.

If you prefer the traditional gas log designs, Design Dynamics, (888) 880-1213, www.innovationonfire.com;

Peterson Real Fyre, www.rhpeterson .com; Vermont Castings, www.vermont castings.com; Heat & Glo, www.heatnglo.com; Heatilator, www.heatilator.com; and Rasmussen Iron Works Inc., (562) 696-8718, www.rasmussen.biz, all have beautiful designs. Rasmussen will customize designs, and has burning rocks and geometric blocks.

A custom Rumford-style Rasmussen-log design is displayed at Evergreen Home and Garden.

The Rumford or teepee-style Rasmussen log set shown in this photo had an extra log added to make it better fit the large Design Dynamics' wood-burning fireplace.

My publisher and his wife took one look at Fireglass and fell in love. If you drive out to Evergreen Home and Garden the same thing could happen to you.
