Consider thermal imaging to locate an uknown chimney leak

Dear Glenn: I have a flat-roofed, cedar-sided contemporary home with a large brick chimney that services three fireplaces, and I have a chronic problem with minor leaks both around the chimney and at certain other locations.

I have had the chimney tuck-pointed, sealed and recapped, the flashing sealed and the siding sealed by various roofing and masonry contractors with very little success.

Can you recommend a contractor to identify and solve the problem? I am located in Lake Angelus in Oakland County.

Jim, Lake Angelus

Dear Jim: Sounds like you need to have some infrared thermography done. That will help find the leak. Then you will have a better idea of how to fix the problem.

Two companies that can help you are Infrared Services of Michigan, (810) 329-9033, www.ismichigan.com, and Thermal Imaging Consultants, (586) 783-8885. Both companies are licensed and insured.

To fix the problem, call Kearns Brothers, (888) 355-6700, www.kearnsbrothers.com.
