Level your concrete floor with a filler to eliminate cracks
Dear Glenn: My husband and I bought cork flooring for our son's former bedroom. He moved out last week. We live in Albuquerque, N.M., so our house is built on a concrete slab. When I removed the carpet and pad from the room, I found two cracks in the concrete. They are not big cracks, but I knew they might indicate that the slab is not as level. We put a straightedge and level to the floor and discovered that there are two humps in the floor and the gap is 1/4 inch. To be clear, I laid a piece of baseboard down across the room and leveled it. The largest gap between the base board and the floor is inch. This is in a space of about 5 feet. The manufacturer of the flooring says the maximum tolerance of the flooring is 1/8 inch in 10 feet. I have a problem. I have two questions for you. Do you think these two cracks represent a structural problem with the house? How do I level the floor?
Kimberley, Albuquerque, N.M.
Dear Kimberley: To level your floor, I would use Bondo Brand Body Filler with Hardener by 3M on a clean, raw, concrete floor. The product will take a car driving over it. If your floor is cracked because of structural problems, I would be seeing very uneven cracks with one side of the crack higher than the other. Cracked concrete is a normal occurrence.
